Care Car Tips

Here are a few tips to help get your vehicle ready for summer......

Exhaust System

Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and examined for leaks including the trunk and floor boards for small holes.  Cold weather will only make an existing problem worse - a breakdown is never pleasant and can even be deadly in the winter.

Fluids

Cooling System:  This system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months.  Be sure to check the level, condition and concentration of the coolant periodically.

Tires

Worn tires will be of little use in snow and ice.  Check tire pressure once a month, be sure to let the tires "cool down" before checking and rotate every other oil change or 6000 miles.

Engine Maintenance

Get engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a reputable repair shop.  Cold weather will make existing problems worse.

Battery

The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment.  Routine care: scrape away corrision from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections.  Avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid.  Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.

Lighting

Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs, periodically clean grime from lenses, remember not to use a dry rag to prevent scratches.

Wiper Blades

Windshield wipers wear out over time and exposure to the elements. Purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build up and be sure to carry an ice scrapper.

Fuel

Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to keep moisture from freezing the fuel lines. Also a fuel tank that is kept full will help reduce moisture.
